The photo book Glass Strenči is a story about a Latvian town Strenči in the period between the two world wars. The book contains an extensive selection of images from the archives of a photography studio in Strenči (now the collection of the Latvian Museum of Photography).

The photographs created by the founder of the studio Dāvis Spunde, and his successors the Krauklis family, show a period in history when the Latvian nation was beginning to form after the newly acquired independence; they describe the daily life of the Latvian province hidden from “Big History” and, of course, the technical progress, which slowly but steadily changed the local life. Strenči was possibly the most visually documented settlement in interwar Europe.

It is possible that the book is powerful precisely because it highlights the specificity and mutability of the photographic medium. A historical resource, a beautiful image, an illustration of national identity, for some a set of personal memories or a message articulated in the language of contemporary art—the meaning of a photograph flows and changes depending on the reader, the context, and the time in which it is viewed. From joie de vivre to drama, Glass Strenči is a subjective ode to the photographic medium at a specific time and place. Liāna Ivete Beņķe, Svešinieks mazpilsētā

One thing I know for sure: any time I’m feeling down on photoland and the sheer tedium of its Kabuki Theater I’ll pull out this book, to look at photographs that remind me of what a truly wonderful and joyful medium photography can be. This really is one of the best photobooks I’ve seen in a long time. — Jörg M.Colberg , Glass Strenči
